Florian Bong Kil Grosse (1977) is a German photographer of Korean descent. His photographs are characterized by careful observations and depictions of urban spaces and human interactions. They often describe banal situations and everyday phenomena that are removed from their original context and given new meaning and significance.
Although he lives in Germany, a large part of his work was created in the country, which he left as an adopted child in the late 1970s. His reflections on Korea articulate questions about origin, identity and self-determination. It is the observing, distant look of an outsider, and yet the viewer is always aware of the photographer’s strong connection to this place.
With his current project Blank Verse, he shifts his focus from the urban to the natural, turning his lens towards the volcanic landscapes of Jeju Island, located in the strait south of Korea. The depictions do not extend an invitation to Jeju, but rather show an island beyond the coastal roads and hiking trails. They point to a shadowy world where deep blackness and rampant wild growth represent no contradiction.
플로리안 봉길 그로세(1977년생)는 한국계 독일 사진작가입니다. 그로세는 도시 공간에서 사람들이 움직이고 어울리는 모습을 깊이 관찰하고 묘사합니다. 그의 시선은 진부하거나 일상적인 장면에 새로운 맥락과 의미를 부여합니다.
그로세의 작품 대부분은 그가 살고 있는 독일이 아닌, 1970년대 후반 해외로 입양되면서 떠날 수 밖에 없었던 한국에서 촬영한 사진입니다. 한국에서의 작업은 뿌리와 정체성, 그리고 자결권과 같은 질문에 대한 작가의 성찰을 담고 있습니다. 그것이 거리감을 내포한 외부인으로서의 관찰적 시선일 수 밖에 없음에도 불구하고, 관객은 작가와 한국 사이의 강열한 연결성을 느끼며 작품을 경험합니다.
현재 진행중인 프로젝트 <각운 없는 시(Blank Verse)>에서 그로세는 도시에서 자연으로, 한국 최남단 해협에 위치한 화산섬 제주의 풍경으로 렌즈의 초점을 이동합니다. 하지만 그의 사진은 해안도로나 곶자왈 등 우리에게 익숙한 제주가 아닌, 그 너머의 섬으로 초대합니다. 그것은 깊은 암흑과 야생의 활력이 만연하지만 충돌하지 않는 그림자 세계와도 같습니다.
